Wedding Dress Codes Decoded

Let’s be honest, wedding dress codes can sometimes be hard to decipher. From a casual soiree to a black-tie affair, finding the perfect dress means trying to figure exactly what to wear based on your invitation. Preparing for an upcoming wedding? Read on for our expert advice on what to wear based on different wedding dress codes!

Casual

Style WBM2613 & WBM2526

Headed to a casual wedding or backyard minimony? We’ve got you covered! While a casual dress code hints at a more laid-back wedding atmosphere, you may want to opt against your classic t-shirt and jeans. Instead, try a trendy dress or a flirty romper. Because of the relaxed dress code, this is your chance to play around with the patterns and hemlines of your dress. Our favorite style? A high-low dress! The unique hemline offers a modern touch to your classic sundress. Keep your accessories relaxed with a simple pair of sandals and a denim jacket (in case you get cold)!

Cocktail

Style WBM2617 & 2584X

Does your invitation read cocktail or semi-formal as the dress code? No need to stress! Think of this dress code as your wedding guest default mode. Just about any silhouette, either long or short will work for this type of event. We especially love midi and tea-length styles. For a chic yet comfortable look, try a sleek off-the-shoulder jumpsuit. Pair with a statement pair of sparkling earrings or shoes for an elevated touch!

Formal

Style D21NY010W & WBM2516

Attending a formal or black-tie affair soon? For most formal dress codes, a floor-length gown is an ideal choice. If the couple doesn’t specify a color scheme, have fun and experiment with a bold sahde, like a deep wine or a sophisticated sapphire. Complete your formal look with some dazzling jewelry and a matching handbag.

Summer Wedding Guest Dresses Inspiration

As the weather warms up and summer wedding season approaches, it can be a bit tricky to figure out how to stay cool yet dress-code appropriate while still looking your best. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered with all the wedding guest style inspiration you need, no matter the dress code, or temperature. Keep reading for the guest’s guide on what dresses to wear to a wedding this summer.

Casual

Styles WBM3089, D39NY22149, D24NY2108

Since many casual summer weddings are outside—think backyard barbeques and garden parties—keep the heat in mind. Look for mini dresses made with breathable fabrics accentuated by pretty floral prints and bright colors. Summer dresses with shorter hemlines, strappy backs, and keyhole cutouts help you stay cool. Add comfortable flats or sandals and a couple low-key accessories to complete your look.

Semi-Formal

Styles D24NY22122, D21NY22305V3, D21NY22300V1

What’s the best dress for a semi-formal summer wedding? Something chic and elegant. You can’t go wrong with a cocktail dress featuring a bright color or beautiful pattern. Consider a lightweight midi slip dress paired with a block heel for a stylish and sophisticated look. A relaxed updo hairstyle is a perfect no-fuss choice for humid weather—plus, it’s a great way to show off a fabulous pair of statement earrings!

Formal

Styles D28NY22289, WBM3095, WBM2954

It can definitely be difficult finding the perfect formal guest dress that will keep you cool during a hot summer wedding. Dresses enhanced with sparkles and sequins are a great option for formal summer weddings, including black-tie events. An embellished dress will fancy up your look, without the need for bulky accessories. Simple heeled sandals and subtle crystal earrings let the dress—and you!—shine.

Destination

Styles D21NY22301V2, D39NY22133, D21NY22160V1

Easy is the name of the game when it comes to summer destination weddings. Pick a bright, breezy dress in a packable fabric, throw on some sandals and hoops, and you’re all ready for a beach wedding! If you’re headed to a tropical locale, wear your hair in long, beachy waves for an effortless sun-kissed look.

Mother of the Bride & Groom

Styles D40NY22371, WBM3178, WGIN5141D

Whether helping the bride get ready, arranging last-minute details, or giving a teary-eyed toast, moms are busy on the big day. A flowy, sleeveless dress lets you go here, there, and everywhere with ease, and is perfect for hot summer temps. Be sure to bring a lightweight wrap for when you want to take a quick break from the dance floor.

Summer wedding season has arrived but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay cool while still looking your best! Besides the warmer weather, you also need to consider the location, time of day, and dress code when picking out the perfect summer wedding guest dresses. Whether the wedding vibe is more laid back or on the fancier side, this guide will help you choose the dress that is just right for you and your upcoming wedding event. A Love-Filled Mini Wedding in New Jersey

Real weddings are so inspiring! To get you in the mood to plan, we asked real brides to spill the details on everything from getting engaged to finding their wedding dresses to the special touches and surprising moments that made their celebrations completely one-of-a-kind. Quiana and Mark had to downsize their wedding celebrations but still made it a day to remember. Read on for more from their love-filled mini wedding in New Jersey.

How did you and your fiancé meet? How did you know that he was the one?

Mark and I met at church. We actually attended the same church all our lives but it wasn’t until a dance rehearsal for a church event in 2012 that we spoke for the first time. He had such a kind, outgoing personality, and a true servant’s heart. I knew Mark was the one for me by the way he pursued me during our courtship. His strong faith in God, character, and charm won me over.

Tell us your proposal story!

It was our 6-year anniversary. We decided to do a gift exchange over dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. I had a feeling this could be the day he popped the question so I made sure I looked ready just in case! He was so excited that he was dropping hints throughout the night. He kept telling me “the night isn’t over yet.” He decided to wait until after dinner to surprise me with my gift which was the proposal and he popped the question right outside of the restaurant! It was just the two of us and it was super sweet.

How did you decide on your wedding day look?

I was planning for our big day for years in advance. I knew it was coming so I had a ton of different dress styles saved in my photo gallery. Pinterest became my best friend too! I created a board with all kinds of bridal inspiration. All of the dresses I saved to my gallery had something in common. I loved hints of lace and tulle. So, when I started my dress search, trying on these styles helped me narrow down my wedding day look.

Do you have any shopping advice for future brides?

Dress shopping can get stressful so before you begin your journey just take a deep breath! Take a few minutes for self-love. Yes, admire your body in the mirror. As women, we’re quick to vocalize the areas we don’t like about ourselves, but now is the time to embrace it all. Try on multiple styles to see what best complements your shape. You might find that you like some styles that are not on your Pinterest board. Lastly, remember that this is YOUR special day and as long as you LOVE the dress you walk down the aisle in, you’ve made the right choice.

What was your favorite detail about your look?

Oh! I LOVED the hidden pockets on my dress. The pockets were disguised in the tulle skirt. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered them and I even kept my phone in there so I didn’t need a purse.

How did you feel when you knew that you #foundtheone?

I was thrilled! After shopping around for about a month, I was finally able to say yes to the dress! It was a blessing to have found the dress when I did. The wedding was 3 months away so thank you David’s Bridal!

Tell us about your wedding day!

Our wedding was just beautiful. I loved every moment of it. Mark and I decided to save our first kiss for this day so we were super excited for that moment. We dated for 7 years, so this day was long awaited. The whole day was unforgettable.

Bride and groom dancing

Did anything funny or unexpected happen?

It rained! We knew there could be a chance of rain on the wedding day but just a week before the big day the forecast predicted sun! I was saddened because I would’ve loved an outdoor wedding but a little rain didn’t steal our joy. The rain actually added a memorable touch.

Is there something you wish you had known before the big day/while you were planning the wedding?

The more time to plan, the better! You’ll be more at ease. We got married during a pandemic and there was so much uncertainty around wedding planning that we had to make quick decisions. Ultimately, we could’ve waited but we just didn’t want to take that chance not knowing what the next few months could bring. We had faith and took a chance. We couldn’t be happier.

Did you have to make any changes to your wedding plans because of Covid?

Due to Covid- 19 we had to downsize our guest count. Although it was bittersweet and there were quite a few loved ones who couldn’t make it, we were happy that our wedding was intimate and we’re grateful for the ability to stream. Everyone was safe and loved ones could still be a part of our special day.

What was your favorite DIY or personal touch?

My mom made my bouquet. Watching her smile and beam with joy as I watched her work her magic made it so special.  She made it with lots of love. She also made the wedding favors. We had these personalized bells on the chairs before the ceremony that said “Ring the bell and wish them well”.

Bride putting on final touches of jewelry

What did you do to stay stress free on your wedding day?

I prayed! My faith is the biggest part of my life. It keeps me grounded. I also laughed a lot with my sister. Laughter is always good.

What’s your best advice for brides that are planning their weddings right now?

Try not to worry too much because it all works out in the end. Remember why you’re getting married and who you’re getting married to and no matter what happens on that day you’ll be happy and grinning from ear to ear.

Low-Key Looks for a Laid-Back Affair

These days, low-key weddings are having a big moment! Casual weddings call for laid-back looks for you, your fam, and your party! Because no matter where (or how) you’re saying “I Do”, your look deserves maximum style! Read on for casual wedding looks for the entire party, perfect for your laid-back affair.

For the Bride Babe

Styles DS870158, DB3230, 21395D

Nothing says casual quite like a LWD! Headed to the courthouse, tying the knot at city hall, or planning to elope? A shorter-hemmed dress is perfectly bridal and totally fuss-free. Try a fun fit-and-flare for a dance floor ready look or capture sophistication with an elegant sheath style, both comfortable, casual, and oh-so-chic! And for the non-traditional bride, your unexpected wedding plans are the perfect occasion for a not so ordinary look, like a jumpsuit! Of course, the details complete the look so add a touch of bling to show off your personal bridal style!

For Mom

Styles WBM2277, VCRS1482

Your #1 fan deserves a top-tier look, no matter how casual your event may be! For Mom, a high-low style has all the comfort of a casual look with a sophisticated edge to match the occasion. Looking for a little glam? A shimmering glitter lace knee-length sheath adds glamour without stealing the show. And because comfort is key, a soft chiffon capelet at the shoulders adds coverage without sacrificing style!

For Your Maids

Styles DS270106, F20240, F20244, DS270108, DS270104

Short styles are so in! And since not all short bridesmaids dresses are created equal, you’ll find styles and shades that work for your big (or small) day! Lustrous fabrics add shine and dimension to a simple look while flowing chiffon skirts make for a twirl-worthy party look! Serving as the perfect backdrop for flowers or accessories, these flirty and fun styles are anything but boring! Plus, the casual looks can be worn again (and again!)

For Your Finishing Touches

Casual Bridal Accessories

Styles AWC02WHG, STARLET, HBG7006, MK1021V3, MK1007, NFJ812G124

Some wedding details will never go out of style! No matter what your big day looks like, wedding accessories are a must! Stay comfy (and cute) in a chic satin robe while you prep for the day. Complete your look with accessories that add some glam to your low-key look. Think sparkling flats, a clutch to hold your essentials, and masks to match!

Ready to find your casual wedding looks for the entire party? Shop these and more styles for you, your maids, Mom, and more in-store at your local David’s Bridal or online at davidsbridal.com!

An Intimate California Elopement planned in 90 days

Real weddings are so inspiring! To get you in the mood to plan, we asked real brides to spill the details on everything from getting engaged to finding their wedding dresses to the special touches and surprising moments that made their celebrations completely one-of-a-kind. Jordan and Alfonso planned their intimate California elopement in 90 days! Read on for more mini wedding inspiration!

How did you and your fiancé met! How did you know that he was the one?

Alfonso and I were talking on the phone and texting nonstop before our first date. I think we both knew that this was something special. We spent over four hours in this restaurant! Talking about everything under the sun, so many laughs, and lots of flirty smiles. It honestly felt like we knew each other for years. We felt so much comfort with one another. We never experienced anything like this before. It wasn’t too long before we were spending several days together and going on constant adventures and trying new things. Over time, we learned so much from each other and grew together not only as individuals but as partners.

Tell us your proposal story!

It was intimate and sweet. Just the two of us. On Christmas Day, we spent the morning in our Christmas pajamas and opening up presents with our 8-month-old puppy. We were so happy and relaxed, sipping coffee. It was honestly the perfect moment. The next thing I know, he disappears and a tiny little red box in his hands. Lots of happy tears and kisses were shared as we opened up this new chapter in our life.

How did you decide on your bridal look and how did you feel when you #foundtheone?

I knew I wanted something unique and not super formal. I wanted to look gorgeous but also relaxed! Honestly, this was the first dress I tried on. I felt like ME!  The top piece was my favorite. The beadwork was exquisite and unique. I felt 100 percent comfortable. I tried on a second dress afterward as I had at least six others picked but I knew instantly that the first one was THE ONE!

Do you have any shopping advice for future brides?

Go with your heart. I guaranteed that you will know as soon as you see yourself in the dress!

Was there a highlight or most memorable moment of the day?

My wedding day was planned in less than 90 days. We were originally planning for March 2021 but as the pandemic continued to get worse and planning became more and more difficult, we decided on an elopement ceremony. The most memorable moment was the first look – when he first opened up his eyes and saw me in my dress. We were able to have an intimate and loving moment before our ceremony. It is a memory I will always cherish.

Did anything funny or unexpected happen?

We did a brief champagne toast after our ceremony and a close friend and family member prepared a tiny speech during that time. Unexpectedly, almost every single one of our family members started coming up to say a speech. It was so unexpected and spontaneous. It was a circle of tears and so many laughs as both our families bonded over our love.

Is there something you wish you had known before the big day/while you were planning the wedding?

Despite us skipping the traditional wedding route and going for a minimony, there still was a lot of detail to consider! I would say get organized on the vendors, their contact, their deposits, etc. It was definitely a lot to keep track of and definitely have a designated person on the wedding day as well. Luckily, my friend took over to help take care of the administrative stuff during the wedding so I did not have to worry.

What was your favorite DIY or personal touch?

I created my own bouquet from scratch!

What did you do to stay stress-free on your wedding day?

Lots of deep breathing. I made sure to get lots of sleep before the big day as well!

What’s your best wedding planning advice?

Get a good photographer – it’s worth the money. I knew I needed a photographer that was able to take pictures without us posing and allow us to be our natural selves. Chic Boho Elopement at Joshua Tree

Real weddings are so inspiring! To get you in the mood to plan, we asked real brides to spill the details on everything from getting engaged to finding their wedding dresses to the special touches and surprising moments that made their celebrations completely one-of-a-kind. Read on for Jordan and Tylar’s chic boho elopement at Joshua Tree.

Briefly tell us how you and your fiancé met! How did you know that he was the one?

We started dating when I was a junior and he was a senior in high school and we’ve been inseparable ever since! Conveniently, we had the same school in mind and went to James Madison University together. We lived together our senior year and then after graduating, we moved to California together! I knew he was the one before I even turned 18. Our love was cosmic. We were perfect for each other. Our first date was the first time we’d ever spoken to each other but it felt like we’d known each other our whole lives. As cliche as it sounds, it was truly love at first sight!

Tell us your proposal story!

In our first year of college, we went to California to visit my brother for a summer vacation. I’d been once before and insisted on taking him to see the sunset in Laguna Beach, so when we went it was absolute magic. Apparently, at that moment he knew he’d bring me back to that same spot one day to pop the question. Fast forward five years, he got our mutual friend and photographer Rohn to ask me to do a photo shoot for my blog one day, so I just assumed he was in town for work and wanted to create together. I drove to Laguna without a clue of what was about to go down. I literally wore a wedding pantsuit because I thought I was just shooting some looks for Instagram. So embarrassing!

When we got down to the beach, Rohn handed me his phone to watch a video of Tylar telling me he loved me and that he wanted to ask me a question. On the beach were four lanterns, each with a folded up love note on the inside. Each love note ended with a line of this poem that Tylar ends all of his love letters with. When I walked around the corner after reading the last note, he was standing there beside the same flowers he left on my porch the night he asked me to be his girlfriend in 2012.

I walked over to him, he grabbed my hand and told me how he wanted to love me forever, and got down on one knee. I’m not going to lie, I kind of blacked out a little bit because I was so nervous, but I embraced him immediately and said yes! On the inside of my engagement ring, he engraved the last line of the poem he ends all of his letters with: “but never doubt I love.”

How did you decide on your wedding dress?

I tried on a ton I thought I liked but cried when I tried the one on (a beaded V-neck sheath from the DB Studio collection)! I didn’t expect to want something so classy and traditional, but it was perfect. The beading in the center is shaped like a diamond and I love the open back! I felt excited, emotional, and like a bride when I found the one!

Do you have any dress-shopping advice for future brides?

Go in open-minded! You never know what you want until you try it on. I thought I wanted something super boho with lace and bell sleeves. But that style ended up being super unflattering on me and I ended up with a fitted, beaded, Gatbsy-looking dress!

Tell us about your wedding day!

We got married in Joshua Tree, just the two of us. My brother officiated the wedding, which was really special. Tylar was waiting for me in the desert as I rolled up in a vintage white mustang. Once I got over to him, he turned around and cried when he saw me for the first time. We exchanged our vows, cried a lot, and then made it official! It was super easy and super simple, but it was absolute magic. After we finished the ceremony and the photos, we hopped in the convertible, blasted classic rock, and drove to Popeyes to end the night!

Bride holding bouquet in the air at Joshua Tree National Park

Was there a highlight or most memorable moment of the day?

Tylar’s vows were everything to me. People get caught up in the location, the guests, the bridal party, and all that jazz but all I needed was to hear him promise himself to me. We both wrote our own vows and his were the most romantic thing I’d ever heard. He could literally give Nicholas Sparks a run for his money.

Did anything funny or unexpected happen?

I almost forgot my bouquet. Ty left for the desert first so that he didn’t see me in my dress and my brother drove me there in the mustang after. The mustang wouldn’t start at first, and when it finally did I realized I forgot my bouquet when we were halfway there so we had to turn back around and get it.

Is there something you wish you had known before the big day or while you were planning the wedding?

Honestly, it went so well. I highly suggest eloping because it went exactly as planned and was stress-free!

What did you do to stay stress free on your wedding day?

I listened to my favorite songs all day to distract my mind!

What’s your best wedding planning advice? And what advice do you have for brides that are planning their weddings right now?

Get eloped! It’s so special having the ceremony for just you and your partner. Even if you celebrate or have an official ceremony later, I highly suggest taking a day for just you two. There was something so magical about being alone in the desert with just our vows and promise of infinite love. It was easy going, relaxing, special, intimate, romantic, and perfect.

An Outdoor Micro Wedding at Lake Michigan

Real weddings are so inspiring! To get you in the mood to plan, we asked real brides to spill the details on everything from getting engaged to finding their wedding dresses to the special touches and surprising moments that made their celebrations completely one-of-a-kind. Read on for Sarah and Rachel’s outdoor micro wedding at Lake Michigan

Briefly tell us how you met! How did you know that the other was the one?

We met on Tinder. We matched and then Sarah messaged Rachel first and told her how cool her dog was! We met for brunch about two weeks later and within a couple of weeks, we were spending most of our free time together!

Rachel: I knew Sarah was the one when she told me that she loved to play chess and was looking for a chess partner!

Sarah: I knew Rachel was the one when I was watching her practice her cello one day and it just hit me out of nowhere!

Tell us your proposal story!

The proposal happened on our back patio on April 22, in the middle of the COVID-19 shutdown. It was always a matter of when we would get married, not if. We were talking about the future and Rachel first brought up getting married this summer at her parent’s lake house in Michigan. Sarah had always told Rachel that she would say yes whenever Rachel asked. So Rachel formally got down on one knee and proposed. And Sarah said yes!

How did you both decide on your wedding day look?

Sarah knew she wanted a dress and Rachel knew she wanted a white suit!

Wedding Dress and Sash Detail Shot

Do you have any dress-shopping advice for future brides?

The clothes you will look the best in are the clothes that you feel comfortable wearing. Also, be open to options that may be different than what you initially wanted. Sarah didn’t want a strapless dress and that’s what ended up looking the best. Rachel didn’t want anything sparkly or flashy, but ended up wearing a sequined camisole under her suit jacket.

Did you have a first look?

We did!

Rachel: It was so nerve-wracking because I was walking backward toward Sarah. She looked amazing. She always looks amazing, but it was a different type of amazing for a special day!

Sarah: I was so nervous because she had never seen me that fancy before! I was blown away by how beautiful she was (and always is!) and when I saw her, my nerves disappeared and I was so excited to marry her!

Tell us about your wedding day!

It was such an amazing day. There were really good people there — just 6 people, not including us or Sarah’s son. There was so much food, we had so much fun! We held the ceremony on a neighborhood deck, overlooking a bluff leading to Lake Michigan. It was a bit cloudy and breezy, which was nice so we didn’t swelter in the July heat. We had a small reception with our 6 guests at Rachel’s parents’ lake house. Rachel is a professional cellist and serenaded guests with an impromptu chamber music recital with two of her friends, who were also our wedding violinists!

Did anything funny or unexpected happen?

Yes, a couple of funny things happened. We forgot to bring our marriage certificate to fill out on the deck after our ceremony, so we had to assure our officiant we actually had it and we had to rush to get it to her afterward. Also, we had our pictures taken at sunset on Lake Michigan. We carefully waded out to a rock off the shore. As we were getting down, we slipped off the rock and fell into the water. Oops!

Is there something you wish you had known before the big day/while you were planning the wedding?

Really take the time to remember and enjoy every detail about your day. When you marry the right person, your wedding day is amazing and perfect and you will want all those memories seared into your brain.

What was your first dance song?

We didn’t do a public first dance, but we danced privately to “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers.

What was your favorite DIY or personal touch?

We couldn’t have a full quartet because of COVID-19. Instead, Rachel’s two friends, who are violinists in her quartet, came to play at our wedding. Rather than the traditional wedding songs, she requested they play virtuosic selections from the violin repertoire. Also, since the wedding guest list was so tiny, Sarah put together fun wedding swag with coffee mugs, personalized pencils, Michigan magnets and Petoskey stones, which are unique to the area.

What did you do to stay stress-free on your wedding day?

Rachel: I took a walk by herself before the ceremony.

Sarah: I was a ball of nerves until after the ceremony and then it was smooth sailing for everyone after the I do’s. Also, we found time to connect just the two of us throughout the day, which made it even more special.

Rachel, Sarah and Family

What’s your best wedding planning advice? And what advice do you have for brides that are planning their weddings right now?

Don’t let the pandemic stand in the way of getting married. Sure, you shouldn’t throw a huge party right now, but you can have the party after it is safe. Your wedding is for you and your future spouse and no one else. Make it just for the two of you and it will be perfect.
