Shopping for Affordable Wedding Dresses: Everything You Need to Know

Your wedding dress is likely to be the most photographed, remembered, and cherished thing you’ll ever wear, so you probably expect to pay more for it than you would an average outfit. Bridal budgets can vary a lot, however, and as you start to explore the options, you’ll encounter fabulous gowns at all price points. The important thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to blow your bridal budget to find the perfect wedding dress. While the average cost of a wedding dress in America is somewhere between $1,000-$2,500, you can still find plenty of stunning, high-quality wedding dresses under $500.

Why Consider Wedding Dresses Under $500?

There are plenty of reasons a bride might not want to pay top-dollar for a wedding dress. Here are just a few:

  • It frees up your budget  Saving money on your dress means more to spend on other things that are important you, like the perfect venue, vendors and honeymoon.
  • It lets you buy great accessories  Spending less on your dress leaves more money to splurge on jewelry, makeup, and hair.
  • You can get two bridal outfits for the price of one  Finding a wedding dress under $500 can be a plus if you plan to buy a second outfit (like a little white dress) for the ceremony and reception.
  • It matches the vibe of the day  Wedding dresses under $500 can be a great choice for second marriages or more casual celebrations.
  • It fits your personality  Some people just aren’t into expensive clothes, and they get married, too!
  • You’re planning a “Trash the Dress” photo shoot  If the idea of doing a photo shoot in a bog or underwater appeals to you, you probably don’t want to spend top dollar on a dress that will likely get damaged.
  • Bragging rights. Who doesn’t love a great deal?

Is It Really Possible to Find Quality Wedding Dresses at an Affordable Price?

You’ll find that $500 can go far, especially if you’re looking for a relatively simple design. A wedding dress can make a big statement using cut and texture in lieu of elaborate beading, or by strategically placing embellishments instead of just using a lot of them. But if you’re looking for sparkle, you still have options. There are many ways to achieve a glimmering bridal look — for instance, using sequins rather than hand-sewn Swarovski crystals for a bit of sparkle.

Whatever your vision of your dream dress is, chances are there are several wedding dresses under $500 that will meet your needs:

Lace Wedding Dresses

Lace is a classic choice for wedding dresses, and a curve-hugging sheath is an elegant choice. If you’re looking for something a little trendier, an off-the-shoulder neckline is a great option.

Styles 183626DB and DB1531

Beaded Wedding Dresses

Looking for a subtle sparkle? Consider beaded dresses, like a soft and flowing A-line wedding dress with beading accenting the waist, or a tulle dress with a low back and delicate beaded straps.

Styles V9743 and WG4097

Wedding Dresses with Sleeves

A wedding dress with sleeves is a great option for a cold-weather wedding or for a bride who wants a little more coverage. If you’re going for elegant and sophisticated, consider a long sleeve wedding dress, like this chiffon A-line dress with a keyhole back. For a trendy option, consider quarter-length sleeves; this boho wedding style with bubble sleeves drapes like a dream. If short sleeves are more your style, consider a dress with a ruffle hem to elevate the more casual look.

Styles SDWG1126, SDWG0971 and SDWG0825

These are just a small sample of the many quality wedding dresses under $500 you can find. There are plenty of breathtaking options to fit any bridal budget and taste, so don’t limit yourself. After all, the best dress is the one that looks and feels best on you, the bride, and that, like the memories you’ll make while wearing it, is ultimately priceless.

An Intimate California Elopement planned in 90 days

Real weddings are so inspiring! To get you in the mood to plan, we asked real brides to spill the details on everything from getting engaged to finding their wedding dresses to the special touches and surprising moments that made their celebrations completely one-of-a-kind. Jordan and Alfonso planned their intimate California elopement in 90 days! Read on for more mini wedding inspiration!

How did you and your fiancé met! How did you know that he was the one?

Alfonso and I were talking on the phone and texting nonstop before our first date. I think we both knew that this was something special. We spent over four hours in this restaurant! Talking about everything under the sun, so many laughs, and lots of flirty smiles. It honestly felt like we knew each other for years. We felt so much comfort with one another. We never experienced anything like this before. It wasn’t too long before we were spending several days together and going on constant adventures and trying new things. Over time, we learned so much from each other and grew together not only as individuals but as partners.

Tell us your proposal story!

It was intimate and sweet. Just the two of us. On Christmas Day, we spent the morning in our Christmas pajamas and opening up presents with our 8-month-old puppy. We were so happy and relaxed, sipping coffee. It was honestly the perfect moment. The next thing I know, he disappears and a tiny little red box in his hands. Lots of happy tears and kisses were shared as we opened up this new chapter in our life.

How did you decide on your bridal look and how did you feel when you #foundtheone?

I knew I wanted something unique and not super formal. I wanted to look gorgeous but also relaxed! Honestly, this was the first dress I tried on. I felt like ME!  The top piece was my favorite. The beadwork was exquisite and unique. I felt 100 percent comfortable. I tried on a second dress afterward as I had at least six others picked but I knew instantly that the first one was THE ONE!

Do you have any shopping advice for future brides?

Go with your heart. I guaranteed that you will know as soon as you see yourself in the dress!

Was there a highlight or most memorable moment of the day?

My wedding day was planned in less than 90 days. We were originally planning for March 2021 but as the pandemic continued to get worse and planning became more and more difficult, we decided on an elopement ceremony. The most memorable moment was the first look – when he first opened up his eyes and saw me in my dress. We were able to have an intimate and loving moment before our ceremony. It is a memory I will always cherish.

Did anything funny or unexpected happen?

We did a brief champagne toast after our ceremony and a close friend and family member prepared a tiny speech during that time. Unexpectedly, almost every single one of our family members started coming up to say a speech. It was so unexpected and spontaneous. It was a circle of tears and so many laughs as both our families bonded over our love.

Is there something you wish you had known before the big day/while you were planning the wedding?

Despite us skipping the traditional wedding route and going for a minimony, there still was a lot of detail to consider! I would say get organized on the vendors, their contact, their deposits, etc. It was definitely a lot to keep track of and definitely have a designated person on the wedding day as well. Luckily, my friend took over to help take care of the administrative stuff during the wedding so I did not have to worry.

What was your favorite DIY or personal touch?

I created my own bouquet from scratch!

What did you do to stay stress-free on your wedding day?

Lots of deep breathing. I made sure to get lots of sleep before the big day as well!

What’s your best wedding planning advice?

Get a good photographer – it’s worth the money. I knew I needed a photographer that was able to take pictures without us posing and allow us to be our natural selves. When you are in the moment, all you can think about is marrying the love of your life, not necessarily posing, lighting, etc. Our photographer knew exactly what she was doing.

A Gorgeous Outdoor Boho Mini Wedding in Kentucky

Real weddings are so inspiring! To get you in the mood to plan, we asked real brides to spill the details on everything from getting engaged to finding their wedding dresses to the special touches and surprising moments that made their celebrations completely one-of-a-kind. Read on for Breanna and Dalton’s outdoor boho mini wedding in Kentucky.

Tell us how you and your fiancé met! How did you know that he was the one?

Dalton and I met in high school. We started out as good friends and then it became more than that. He was my high school sweetheart! I fell in love with his personality and his passion to make a difference. And I knew that Dalton was the one the moment that he grabbed my hand to pray with me during a rough time. This was a very special moment for me. It made me realize how supportive and caring he is. He has such a loving heart.

Tell us your proposal story!

For one of my Christmas presents, Dalton wanted to take me to a Christmas tree farm to take professional pictures. I’ve always wanted to take pictures like this, so it was very sweet of him to make it happen. On the ride to the tree farm, Dalton talked my ear off as usual, which I love. When he’s passionate about something, he enjoys talking about it. However, once we got to our destination, he soon became very quiet. I noticed that his fists were tightened up as if he was getting really nervous. We met with our photographers and we started taking pictures. The photographers had me go in front of Dalton so they could snap a few pictures with just me in focus and Dalton in the background. They told me to turn around, and I see Dalton smiling from ear to ear and on one knee. He was so nervous that he forgot what to say but it was such a precious moment for me. I said, “yes” obviously!

Breanna and Dalton running on a mountain top in their wedding clothes

How did you decide on your wedding dress?

I only wanted a few people to go dress shopping with me because I felt like the more people the more opinions and I didn’t want that because it would overwhelm me. I had my mom, sister, sister-in-law, grandma, and aunt join me on this special day and had each of them pick a dress that they could see me wearing. When I put the last dress on, I knew that it was the one. I fell in love with it! It was very simple and elegant. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. This dress was for me! My stylist put the veil on me as a final piece, she asked if this was my dress and I teared up. I had a moment and I said, “YES” to the dress!

Do you have any dress-shopping advice for future brides?

Just have an open mind coming in and enjoy this special time with your loved ones!

Did you have a first look? What came to mind when you saw your future spouse for the first time?

We had our first look and I couldn’t keep my eyes off my future husband. He was and is absolutely handsome. It made me excited to know that we were about to become one and grow together as a couple.

Tell us about your wedding day!

We had the most beautiful intimate wedding. We got married in a backyard of an Airbnb in Liberty, KY, and then drove 4 hours away to Max Patch, NC for our couple portraits. It was a fun-filled day with close family and friends and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Confetti falling on bride and groom after the wedding ceremony

Was there a highlight or most memorable moment of the day?

Watching my husband get emotional as I walked down the aisle was one of my favorite parts of the day.

Is there something you wish you had known before the big day?

Don’t be so stressed. Enjoy every moment. Try to be prepared as much as you can and don’t hesitate to ask your friends and family for help.

What was your favorite DIY or personal touch?

My mom and I made my bouquet and my bridesmaids bouquets. It was fun making them as well as spending some quality time with my mom.

What did you do to stay stress-free on your wedding day?

I prayed and tried not to get so worked up. There’s so many emotions but I tried staying calm while spending time with my friends and family. Just go with the flow! Whatever happens, happens. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment because it will all go by so fast.

What’s your best wedding planning advice? And what advice do you have for brides that are planning their weddings right now?

Do what you want to do and make sure your wedding is you. It’s your day, no one else’s. If you dream of having hundreds of people there or just having 10 on a mountain, do it. This only happens once, and you should make sure it’s one of the most memorable days of your life.

Because who says you have to wear a ball gown on your wedding day?

Thanks to inspirational content and insanely beautiful real brides all over Pinterest and Instagram, the standard of having a ‘true to you’ wedding has heightened. We have been so inspired by this nontraditional, alternative bride movement, from the getaway gal to City Hall I do’s, that we have an outfit for everyone no matter their ideal wedding-day style.

Short/High Low

Cropped hemlines are of-the-moment, for their versatility and accessorizing possibilities. The best part about these clean-slate styles is that you can really make the look your own. Rock your favorite shoes and everyday earrings for a casual feel, or go glam with a sparkly pump and over the top jewelry.

Pants/Jumpsuits

Pants please! Wearing separates or a jumpsuit on your wedding day isn’t just casual and comfortable, it’s the definition of chic. A crisp wide-leg, white pant and strappy crop top to match is the ultimate cool girl combo. Looking for something a tad more formal? Give our strapless jumpsuit a try. The greatest part about these styles is that you can (and will!) wear them again.

Simple/Effortless Sheaths

This is probably the easiest way to partake in the alternative bride trend without straying too far from wearing a long, white dress. Simple sheaths are easy and light weight options that can work for almost any wedding. It’s all about how you style it!

Not into wearing something other than a beautiful, long, white dress on your big day? Consider giving these looks a go for events surrounding your wedding, such as your rehearsal dinner or bridal shower. To help guide you in the right direction, explore our casual dress assortment, over 100 carefully selected styles that are perfect for the alternative bride. Remember, whatever you do, be you!

An outdoor destination wedding for the care-free bride.

For our Spring 2018 Galina collection creative shoot, we packed up some beautifully simple wedding dresses and headed to the desert to create the most breathtaking outdoor wedding scenes. We envisioned an easy-going bride with a past of spontaneously packing up and hitting the road, sleeping under the stars, and living in the moment and brought that unscripted vibe to her wedding day. Set in  Joshua Tree and surrounded by raw beauty, she’s ready to begin the next adventure with her partner and friends by her side.

Can we talk about this scenery? A nature-lovers dream! Rock formations and actual Joshua trees serves as the altar for this outdoor wedding. In addition to being picturesque, they provided our crew with some much needed shade in the stifling August heat.

Now, on to the dresses. For the bride, both gowns  featured soft floral details, a trend you’ll find in many of the refreshingly simple wedding dresses in the Galina collection. The first dress has 3D florals scattered across the  bodice and illusion corseted back. The second dress is an all-over, floral lace halter dress with a breezy back detail, perfect for a warm-weather wedding.  The bridesmaids wore bold brights, including flowy jumpsuits (!), and printed heels, to complement the Galina bride’s relaxed, eclectic style.

Girl gang, out. Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes featuring new wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses from our Spring collections.

Who What Wear shares the inspiration for our Spring 2018 Galina campaign.

Who What Wear, the elevated online destination for aspirational yet accessible fashion content, shared an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at our Spring 2018 Galina Collection campaign shoot in Joshua Tree National Park. The editors at Who What Wear speak with our design team about inspiration behind this season’s collection. They discuss adventure, travel, bridal trends and who we see as our Galina girl.

Dan Rentillo, Vice President of design and product development, explains that this season’s campaign was inspired by a couple seeking adventure, experience, and travel. Hosting the photo shoot at Joshua Tree seemed so fitting to our team. A dramatic desert with the expansive open sky and amazing natural light is the perfect backdrop to narrate the Spring 2018 Galina story and highlight new Galina wedding dresses.

Defining our Galina bride as eclectic, free-spirited, playful, and fresh, this season we address her style evolution. Focusing on the ease of this collection, Spring 2018 offers the Galina bride flowier shapes, lighter fabrics and plenty of vintage Boho wedding dress styles. Although Galina is a cohesive collection, each dress is individual and has unique fabric accents.
